The one about Ireland was interesting, but, unexpectedly, I felt he missed the spirit of the place. He has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice and among other accolades, The National Trust has named him a Living Treasure.This is a great book if you are like many Australians and consider Tim Winton to be one of our greatest authors ever. This book is in part autobiography - a reminisce and meander through Tim’s life as told by him - and part commentary and opinion piece on matters close to Wintons heart. Well worth reading.I have loved every minute of reading this book with my ears, especially as it was read to me by Mr Winton himself. Sometimes Tim Winton blows me out of the water with his writing.

Need another excuse to treat yourself to a new book this week? There is barely a mention of his writing before he is on a cool environmental crusade and is suddenly billed as the “celebrity activist”  brought out to bring in the crowds, the bait to get the press along. Of course the language used is mesmerizing and compact - he tells us so much in few words. I would recommend for Tim Winton fans for sure. In part, this book was so compelling in its early sections because it resonated so strongly with my own childhood and adolescent experiences that I felt I was reading about what happened to me growing up rather than what happened to Winton.This was a pleasant surprise. Not only do these forces alter the natural balance, they also strip communities of local knowledge and language. The opening story/essay ‘The Boy at the Window’ is a cautionary tale.
