Reports As she walks down 7th Street in Manhattan, Crutchfield’s wisdom collects into buckets: “Real love don’t follow a straight line/It breaks your neck, it builds you a delicate shrine,” and, “You might mourn all that you wasted/That’s just part of the haul.” Her pen moves ornately across the page, the aperture of her songwriting flies open. “Tomorrow could feel like a hundred years later, I’m wiser and slow and attuned,” she sings on “Fire,” along to a tempo that matches her steady pace.

The fifth full-length release for the indie music project of Katie Crutchfield was produced by Brad Cook. (Doesn't Taylor Swift do the exact same thing?) “We try to give it all meaning/Glorify the grain of the wood,” Crutchfield sighs. That being said, Saint Cloud is 2020's best so far. These types of songs, tinged with narcissism, usually addressed to an unidentified "you," are uninteresting in the long run. “If the dead just go on living, well there’s nothing left to fear,” Crutchfield sings – not resigned, but hopeful.

On “Lilacs,” a wandering country tune with “Suspicious Minds” chord progressions, Crutchfield makes gradual maturity sound mundane and grandiose all at once. Standouts are "Fire," "Oxbox," and the three closing tracks—but there's not one bad song on this album. I imagine that this album feels like the collective joy we'll all feel whenever this pandemic subsides.

threads its references to mortality and aging carefully, before putting them in stark relief on the final two tracks. The record is made by someone who was always whispering, finally having the confidence and courage to speak up and sing unrestrained. St. 3DS No better from the lyrics or the arrangement of the melody, it can be described as a poetic beauty. Saint Cloud offers us the best possible version of Crutchfield she could possibly give us. What glued all these disparate albums together was Crutchfield’s songwriting, clear-eyed and honest, and on , the sun-kissed compositions match her words perfectly. Coming out of the fiery, raucous rager that was , it would’ve been easy for a sober follow-up to be blandly cleansing or palatable. Much of The climax of the record, “Ruby Falls,” is where all of the ambition and aesthetics come together.
