Red Joan is inspired by a true story of an elderly British woman being outed in the 1980s for being a spy for the Russians and passing along British nuclear secrets. Terrific. Complete nonsense, this film portrays Joan as some sweet, innocent little girl devoid of any responsibility. I understand the pact is not often discussed in Putin's Russia or Jeremy Corbyn's kitchen?

Menu. Review on what has been offered not on what you decide it should be. Despite some minor plot holes, the story is strong and engaging. Cinematography is gorgeous with nice scenes from 40's England. In the closing credits, it reads the movie is based on Melita Norwood's life as a Russian spy but its subject matter has hardly anything to do with Norwood's actual story, which makes it pretty much all fiction, albeit an intriguing one. It is certainly not worth the time, nor even the effort of pressing the play button of the potential viewer and should be discarded, and hopefully, for those who viewed it, cast from the memory of the audience with suffered through the run time of this diabolical drivel. Perhaps calling it 'inspired by a true story' that of Melita Norwood is too far fetched, as that real life Granny Spy never went to Cambridge University, never had a barrister son, never studied physics and had no doubts about her socialist ideals as both her parents were Communists. I've had the chance to see the film at the International Film Festival in San Sebastian and having Judi Dench right on the stage was a plus. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms. My glass was full with the intensity of it all. I went to see this film without any fore knowledge of the content, only the general awareness that Judi Dench plays a senior female Russian spy, Joan Smith, hence the film's title. 27 out of 38 found this helpful. When she sees the devastating effects on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, she decides to give the plans to Stalin, to even things up. Red Joan (2018) cast and crew credits, including actors, actresses, directors, writers and more. in the mid 1930s. A re-imagining of Hamlet, told from Ophelia's perspective. While watching the film, my feelings toward it was like a pendulum, swinging from 'This is a well crafted film' to 'this is nothing more than left wing propaganda'. Thus the film plays fast and loose with the real history and rather cynically tries to entice the viewer into sympathising with "Red Joan" (who didn't have a barrister son in real life either).
Her younger self is played by a competent actress as well whose character is conflicted at times. Based on the absurd but true 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm that was documented in the New Yorker as the origins of the 'Stockholm Syndrome'. It's also skillfully directed, shot and edited. But the storyline of this movie did not work for me.

Red Joan is a movie with exceptional production values: it's beautifully written with a nonlinear but easy to follow and riveting narrative. Joan/Melita was a traitor as much as Lord Haw Haw and she continued to support the Russian communist cause even when it was slaughtering millions of its own population. A thought provoking and interesting film that is intelligent in its approach. The film is "inspired by a true story", and Lindsay Shapero has adapted Jennie Rooney's 2013 novel, which was a blend of history and fiction taken from the life of Melita Norwood ... the longest serving British KGB spy. This film turned out to be a story told in flashbacks as Joan now a senior citizen is arrested for treason.
