In the final, Sugrue took the opening hole with a par before bagging two birdies to go four up through just seven holes.A further birdie, his third of the round at the ninth hole, saw the Cork golfer go five ahead and seemingly in control. But his Scottish opponent Murray didn't lie down and recorded two birdies on the 10th and 13th holes to cut the deficit back to three holes. After the completion of the first 18 holes, Sugrue sat on a three hole lead in front an ever growing crowd on the historic links.Walker fought back though, after Sugrue birdied the second hole once again, by winning the next two and reducing the home favourite's lead to two holes. And the gap was only one when Kilmarnock player Walker birdied the par five 13th after Sugrue's birdie effort grazed the edge of the hole. The match went all-square when Sugrue failed to get up and down from the hollow on the par three 15th as the crowds continued to grow in the Dublin sunshine. They halved the par five 16th in birdie fours but an errant tee-shot from Walker on the 17th saw him only manage a bogey with Sugrue making a par to take a one shot lead going down the last.Walker hit a wide drive on the 18th (their 36th) as both players hit their second shots long over the green. But when the Scot saw his putt come back to his feet, Sugrue capitalised to win the title. With it the Mallow golfer will join the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at Royal Portrush - as a major championship returns to this island for the first time in 70 years. And the 22-year-old will then enjoy his Christmas knowing he will be invited to Augusta National to play in The Masters next April before another trip across the Atlantic for the US Open. Our Irish Mirror Sports page - which brings you all your Irish and UK sports news - can be found You can also check out our Irish Mirror GAA sports James Sugrue during the final round of the Amateur Championship at Portmarnock Golf ClubWhen you subscribe we will use the information you provide to send you these newsletters.
