The movie affirms people can change their hearts from pure hatred to love. Mike Burden, a rising leader in Ku Klux Klan, attempts to break away from the Klan when the girl he falls in love with urges him to leave for the better life they can build together. I don't understand why this didn't get the publicity it deserved, because the story is fascinating, the acting is great, and it's such an important story of American History.

When the Klan seeks Mike out for vengeance, an African American Reverend takes in Mike, his girlfriend and her son, protecting them, and accepting them into their community. The story centers on Mike Burden (Garrett Hedlund), a troubled man who was influenced by Ku Klux Klan leader Tom Griffin (Tom Wilkinson).
The understanding and love are driven by the Black citizens of the town.

What was so profound in the movie was the forgiveness and love from the preacher despite his grandfather was lynched yet helped a redneck illiterate klansman while the KKK man found his heart and asked for forgiveness. I was a new born again Christian who had been raised up in racist household in the fifties and sixties. The movie spotlights the sad struggles Black Americans have each day from racism years after Jim Crowe laws were deemed unlawful- hence the need for black lives matter. Based on a powerful true story, an unlikely friendship is formed when an African American reverend helps a KKK member disavow his racist past and leave the Klan. After Kennedy helps Mike leave behind his violent past, the Baptist preacher finds himself on a collision course with manipulative KKK leader Tom Griffin. Powerful delivery of love for God which equals love for mankind regardless of what prejudices we may have towards each other! But the members of Kennedy's congregation are shocked to discover that his plan includes sheltering Mike Burden, a Klansman whose relationships with both a single-mother and a high-school friend force him to re-examine his long-held beliefs. They opened a KKK museum with confederate flags and other hateful symbols of slavery. The movie is based on a true story in which a hateful Klansman falls in love with a woman and her son as he slowly leaves the Klan with the spiritual guidance of Rev.
It has been covered in numerous articles and a book - movie tie in, Burden: A Preacher, a Klansman, and a True Story of Redemption in the Modern South, by Courtney Hargrave, available on Amazon. Really enjoyed the movie and am a huge fan of Forest Whitaker who plays a Baptist preacher Rev. I had been waiting for two years to see Burden and was disappointed that it had very limited theater distribution. Great acting by no other than Forest Whitaker! If there was a way to rate in between, I would have given it a 4.45. I write this in honor of Pastor James Knight who is now in heaven.
