Named after Baker Street in London, the song was included on Rafferty's second solo album, City to City (1978), which was his first release after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the break-up of his old band, Stealers Wheel, in 1975.
General CommentThis song and the whole Minstrel In the Gallery album were recorded during a time when Ian Anderson's first marriage was coming to an end, and the songs have a kind of wistful, somewhat melancholy feel to them.He takes a look at where he is and what he's become and this is a kind of poem about it all. He used to think it was so easy (making money) but he finds he is sad. беспредел .. подписываюсь что я Миронов Олег Михайлович (Москвич 1959 г.р.) You are right, most of his album is autobiographical.
I’ve never heard "Baker Street" explained, but my take on the song is this: It’s about two lonely people in a city. Якименко , Крайний , ЧМ-2018 НЛО яхтинг ВОВ !
The song was the Scottish singer's first release after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the acrimonious breakup of his band Stealers Wheel in 1975. I was always told very matter-of-fact that the reference to Baker Street was the main downtown street of Nelson, BC in Canada, a very hip place for musicians and cultures of all stripes, especially draft-dodgers, hippies, and spiritual wanderers from all over the world from the 60's to 80's and that he had been there at one time.
The album City to City went to no. This song is perfect for describing that feeling of dissatisfaction.
The first verse finds him walking home after a night of drinking. действительно гнида, трус и мягко говоря врун . Or not. It's a homo-erotic ballad about the lust Sherlock Holmes felt for Dr. Watson.
They find comfort in booze, chemicals, and (occasionally) each other. She keep hoping he will change.
Here is my pedestrian interpretation: It most likely refers to the Baker Street in London because Rafferty was born in Scotland and spent a lot of time in London. Gerry rafferty had so much talent song writer singer etc.

Drinking, one-night stands, another year, giving up these things we know don't bring us happiness, all these distractions and bargains we make with ourselves. She hopes he will change but he doesn't.
The song is named after a street in London and was part of Rafferty’s second solo album “City to City”, which was his first release after a bout of legal issues surrounding the break-up … He never does. Was part of my teen years.
1 in America, and suddenly he found that as a result of his protest, he was a bigger star than ever.
Sad. Yes, two lives judged as wasted on empty promises and misguided choices.
I don't think so.
I see this as sort of a coming of age song-about a young man finding, or figuring out his way in life. Baker street is in fact a reference to a bakers shop in the Stobswell area of Dundee called Wallaces.
He has money as he considers buying some land and moving to a quiet little town. In the intervening three years, Rafferty had been unable to release any material because of disputes about the band's remaining contractual recording obligations.
As someone who works in the movie industry (not music, but similar bs to it), I applaud this interpretation, and it depresses me even more. And It's obviously about drinking to excess because that is what Rafferty did all his life and what eventually killed him.
In short these are the lamentations of a dyed in the wool (I have no desire to and will never ever stop drinking) alcoholic the morning after an all night bender. She keeps seeing a guy who is a player who keeps talking about giving up drinking and one night stands. оптовый рыбный рынок google с 10.12.2002г. When Rafferty stayed in the area he and a friend were regular customers. And what a powerful statement musically and lyrically.
Because, for all its searing beauty, if you listen closely (which he is said to have done obsessively over recent years), Baker Street is neither a romantic nor happy song. Alcohol has a firm grip on your life, it becomes your life, and gerry fell because of the booze. Baker Street was and is a hip area in London known for young, stylish and fast living. Maybe, the song infers a sense of hope, a belief in faith and a dream to be a better person. Yes, autobiographical but there is much more in the "sun is shining" verse. :)
He was doing a lot of travelling between Scotland and London (hence the album title, City to City) and he had a lot of time for reflection and contrast.
