REBELS & REDCOATS by historian Hugh Bicheno, written to accompany a four-part BBC television series presented by Richard Holmes, demonstrates that it was in fact America's first civil war. As it book comes off as a well written rant. Lexington & Concord, Paul Revere's ride and the Boston Tea Party highlight the provocations and reactions that resulted in war. Holmes is a military historian and as such, not immune to jingoistic lionisation of British military exploits throughout history.Looking for some great streaming picks? So if you have background on the war read this fI like this book, although Bicheno has an axe to grind and a clear bias. Bicheno's remarks about the aristocrats (on both sides) setting up the poor to pay the price for war still rings true; the class system is alive as it was then, and continues to oppress those less fortunate. He sees a greyer picture of civil war & American hypocrisy aided by a France pursuing its own imperial interests (& bankruptcy as a result).
